Background
Women Techmakers(WTM) powered by Google Developer Groups(GDG),  celebrates the  international women's day(IWD) by organizing events all over the world through their GDG leads. The aim and vision  of WTM is to provide visibility, community and resources to women in technology. One of the google communities in Kenya, is in Western Kenya(Kisumu,Bondo and  Kakamega).
Western Kenya’s debut in organizing the International women’s day conference was in 28th March 2015. The event brought together 300 people from around western Kenya and Nairobi. More details of the event can be found here.

IWD 2016- KISUMU
Staying true to the WTM vision, the WTM community in Kisumu organized the IWD conference on 12th March 2016 at the Planet Media Cinemas. The theme of this year’s Conference was “It’s our time to lead,” which allowed our speakers  to explore best- topics on how ladies can take advantage of  opportunities available for them. There were 3 keynote addresses , 2 speakers and  a panel discussion with 5 women from different professional backgrounds.. The audience was treated to eclectic presentations  whose topics included  ‘taking the stage’, ‘ Don’t wait to be asked’ , ‘ making a difference’, ‘ creating your career path in university’.
The panel discussion was on ‘Breaking the glass ceiling’. Additionally, the conference gave a platform to young girls who have been part of the schools technovation mentorship programme to present what they have been working on for the past 2 months.

Technovation challenges girls all over the world to build a mobile app that will address a community problem.Women Techmakers Kisumu chapter has been running this year's’ technovation challenge by providing coaches and mentors to the girls.
The schools that participated include Arya primary school, Lions High school and Kisumu Girls.Further, the event brought together, women , girls and men from within and without Kisumu drawn from the local universities, the tech community in Western Kenya from LakeHub.  Our youngest audience in attendance were aged 12yrs from Arya Primary school

The  Conference's’ first keynote address was  by Dorothy Ooko, the communications manager of Google East and Francophone Africa, one of the main sponsors of the event through Google Kenya. The title of her talk was “Taking the stage”. She urged the audience, that for you take the stage one of the key things to do is always to prepare. Her presentation offered an interactive platform where the she posed questions to the audience as they provided her with feedback.
The second Keynote speaker was Ife Osaga, the legal counsel of   Google East and Francophone Africa. Ife’s topic was on “Do not wait to be asked”. She urged the women in the audience, that while forging your career path, ask for what you are  good at and passionate about  and learn to negotiate for your value while at it.
The third keynote address was by Agasna Afrophilia who spoke on ‘Making a difference’. Agasna is the managing partner at  Agasna and Othero Company advocates. She is arguably one of the youngest managing partners in Kisumu. She urged the audience, that for you to make a difference you have to take the first step of actually doing the work. Citing examples in the political scenes, she urged women not shy off from vying because only then will you be able to identify challenges and make a difference at the grass root level.

The programme had 9 teams guided by their  coaches drawn from the LakeHub and programme lead Dorcas Adhiambo. The presentations staggered through the entire conference schedule. Other speakers and Panel discussion
For the afternoon session we had Chrispine Odhimabo, lead designer at LakeHub and founder of Tulasoft Chris, took the audience through reasons why a technology career is one of the best career for women. The other speaker was Cynthia Anyango, founder of  Ujirani and a first year computer science student at Maseno University. Cynthia gave a personal account to provide insights to young university students on how to forge your career path while still in school. She urged the young audience, to always be on the lookout for voluntary opportunities that expose them to their interests and give them a chance to gain skills while still in college. Cynthia, at 17 was one of the youngest founders of her start up company Ujirani.
Panel discussion
The panel discussion titled “Breaking the ceiling” was very interactive, insightful and informative. The topic was crafted bearing in my mind that the this phrase has been used figuratively in several occasions, to inspire men and women to achieve more and encourage them that they are capable of doing so. The panel consisted of experienced professionals from diverse backgrounds. They included:

  1. Dorothy Ooko-  Communications Manager  at  Google
  2. Ife Osaga-Odondo - Legal counsel for Sub saharan Africa at Google
  3. Yvonne Akoth Aluoch- Tech Consultant, Digital Security Trainer
  4. Renish Mboya- Computer Science Lecturer at Maseno University
  5. Salim Faridah  -Nominated member of county assembly Kisumu

This panel was moderated by Percila Njira, a software developer and GDG lead Kisumu

Conclusion
The IWD 2016 Kisumu, was concluded at 5:30 pm with a vote of thanks by Winnie Makokha and thereafter a brief networking among the audience and photo session.
Appreciation: The IWD 2016 Kisumu organizing committee appreciates all the efforts, resources and support  from our partners GDG Kenya, Women@Google Kenya chapter and  LakeHub that made the day successful.

DEVFEST WESTERN KENYA(WTM)

On 28th November 2015 GDG Kisumu hosted Devfest western Kenya. This is an event that took about two months to put together.
I'm particular impressed with this event not only because it was a great success but because ladies were at the fore front in making it a success.

From the organizing team which was lead by your truly(me) ;-). To the break out sessions that were all lead by ladies.

We had four main speakers,  two of these speakers were ladies.
Mercy Orangi gave a keynote on Launchpad and start ups, and how techies, can use launchpad to scale their start-ups.

Roina Acheing of GDG strathmore gave an amazing talk titled "Women Teversation" she talked about the evolution of women in tech and how far we as women have come.

We had four break out sessions Polymer,Android,Fire-base and Techprenuership and start ups.
Polymer,Android,Fire-base sessions, were hands on code labs and the ladies did a good job at it at guided people through it.

The panel discussion included four ladies and two gentlemen, several issues were discussed including how women can run successful tech start ups.

The event had 250 attendees of which women were slightly above 100,this has great fully improved compared to our last devfest.

I'm was glad because women did not take a back sit this time.I also learnt that when we let women get actively participate in an event you increase chances of more women attending the event.

APP INVENTOR TRAINING.

On 7th February 2014 WomenTechmakers Kisumu held had an App Inventor training.
The training was suppose to take 2 hours but it ended up taking about 5 hours :-).
This was because we had an amazing coach. The girls were enjoying the speed at which they were making application and they were having fun creating simple application.

Only 10 girls registered to attend the training but we were later joined by five more girls and 4 boys. The whole training was so much fun that we stayed all through past the intended time (Without snacks or refreshments just water).

What's even amazing is that they offered to go volunteer as coaches in girls high school to teach app inventor through the technovation program.

They can't wait for the women techmakers conference in March

COLLEGEHACK 101

The official #CollegeHack sticker :-)
The first ever #CollegeHack in Western Kenya took place last Saturday at LakeHub, Kisumu. This event saw students from various campuses of higher learning institutions participate in large numbers. This event was the first of its kind and was hugely successful as witnessed by the excitement and satisfaction of the participating teams.

The #CollegeHack is meant to bring college students in Western Kenya together to a one day open hackathon that begun at 9.00am and ended at 5.00pm. #CollegeHack was initiated so that the students could promote their skills in teamwork, entrepreneurial thinking and skill actualization.
A sections of the hackers.
This session was mentored by James Odede, who is the Co-Founder and Director of LakeHub, Dorcas Adhiambo the Community manager and GDG organiser of Kisumu.Chandi Tome, who is also a director at the hub, Micheal Diang’a, a Developer who specializes in Web, George Osang, a Mathematician and programmer, Dennis Ochieng’ Computer Scientist and Businessman and Deryl Aduda, a Marketing and Public Relations guru.
This particular session of #CollegeHack succeeded in its objective of helping the students come up with innovative ideas that would offer real solutions to the community.
One such idea was from a group of four, aptly named Quad IT, who are planning to fully automate the land registry thereby reducing corruption, land grabbing and time wasting by providing an application that will avail land records, location and land laws. This would make the land search and purchase more transparent and less tedious.
NyumbaNeat team presented an idea that offered a home cleaning service through an online portal. NyumbaNeat’s idea was meant to target the young and upcoming professionals (Yuppies) and bachelors.
TechDoc group wanted to boost maternal health by linking expectant women and young mothers to medical practitioners especially in the Western Kenya Region. Their app would also help mothers manage the entire pregnancy with a calendar and best practices. This, they hope, will help reduce pre and post-natal deaths.
X Farm team worked on an idea of an app that would provide farmers with information about farming. This app would enable farmers to get information such as the kind of crop to grow in a particular soil type and climate.
X- farm making a presentation of a smart idea.
M Commerce came up with an idea to offer businesses with no online presence a platform to list their products without incurring the extra cost. M Commerce’s idea would target the the small shops and retail stores while EasyReg group of students worked on an app to eliminate the paper work at college during the registrations of various items.
Some had to operate from two workstations
As you can see, we had lots of fun for a first event of this nature. We have a long way to go, no doubt. And we have realized that many of us have lots of ideas that are worth probably millions of shillings. We therefore have to proceed with the #CollegeHack series next month. Be sure to follow the conversation on Twitter and Facebook.
Calls for applications for the next hack shall be announced soon.
